Description:
ET91 observation railcar, The Glass Train
Idol
The ET91 observation railcar, known as the “Glass Train”, was presented to the public in 1935 at the “100 Years of the German Railway” exhibition in Nuremberg. The Deutsche Reichsbahngesellschaft tried to counter the increasing competition from the bus and to make traveling by rail more attractive with the additional observation railcars, which were powered by diesel-hydraulics. In order to offer a better view, the sloping roof section has also been provided with windows and the usual luggage racks have been dispensed with. In addition, the toilet in the entry area was kept as low as possible and the upper part is glazed on partition walls inside the car. It was thus possible to create good visibility from Allen seats.
In the era of the Reichsbahn, the area of use of the two electric railcars was relatively limited due to the lack of electrification of the rail network. But in the winter of 1936/37 they were also used on ÖBB routes. In May 1943, the second ET91.02 railcar was destroyed in a bomb attack on Munich, whereupon the ET91.01 was safely parked outside of Munich. In 1949 the ET91.01 was prepared for operation in Bww München-Pasing and was used again from the summer. After the expansion of the network, it not only reached Aachen, Hamburg, Vienna and Graz, but was also used frequently abroad: in Northern Italy, France, Luxembourg, Yugoslavia. He was often on the road, especially in Austria and Switzerland, which is why one of the pantographs was replaced by a single-arm pantograph in 1976. After the fall of the Wall, he was allowed to enter the previously forbidden terrain, the DR network. On 12. Dec In 1995 the Transparent Train in Garmisch-Patenkirchen collided head-on with an ÖBB locomotive, following which it was deleted from the DB in 1997 and since 2005 it has been parked in the Augsburg railway park.
