The Coast Daylight was introduced by the Southern Pacific in 1937 as the first of the famous luxury trains on the Los Angeles - San Francisco route. The almost 600km long journey led along the Pacific coast and was comfortably covered in a day trip. The trains were hauled by the large steam locomotives of the Golden State Series (GS) until 1955.
The continuous orange-red color scheme of the train from the locomotive to the end car was the external trademark. All imaginable amenities were provided on the train: generous space, air conditioning, lounges and exquisite catering. The comfort cars were built on modern streamliners. Especially for the Daylight fleet, open-plan cars were developed as double units and a restaurant area as a triple unit, which ran on Jacobs bogies. The trains carried up to 20 car lengths, depending on requirements.
